Round and Round We Go

Educator Resource Kit

What is the relationship between the Earth, Moon and Sun? Why does the Moon appear to change shape in the sky? Why do we see different constellations at different times of the year? In this highly interactive and kinesthetic class, we'll explore these questions and more as we "dance the night away." For grade levels 2–4.

After participating in this Discovery Class, students will be able to:

  • Explain and demonstrate the difference between rotation and revolution, and project these concepts onto the Earth, Moon and Sun system.
  • Observe that objects in the sky have patterns of movement including the Sun, Moon and the stars, and explain the cause of this apparent movement.
  • Observe the changes in the apparent shape of the Moon, and describe the pattern of changes.
  • Observe that patterns of stars in the sky stay the same although they appear to move across the sky nightly and vary with the seasons.

Seasonal schedules

Visiting soon? Check out MPSC's interactive calendar to see what's happening when you'll be here. Just click the date — the interactive calendar is typically up-to-date within one week of today.

Please note that MPSC does not offer all of its shows every day and that exhibits may be closed for maintenance or for classes during some hours.

If you're planning to visit several weeks from today, check out our current schedule of public shows to plan your trip and check the interactive calendar just before your visit to learn about any schedule updates.

Please note that seasonal schedules change four times each year (spring, summer, fall and holiday), and some shows are not offered during every schedule.

School shows

In addition to its public shows, MPSC offers shows during the week especially for school classes and other field trip groups. These school shows do not appear on the seasonal schedule but do appear on MPSC's daily calendar.

If seats are available, the public may purchase tickets to school shows.

However, school groups with reserved seating have first priority on any remaining seats (for example, if extra chaperons attend), so MPSC cannot guarantee that public seats will be available for school shows.
